2017 Department Scholarship Winners 


George L. & Cleo S. Cross Graduate Endowed Scholarships - $2000 each

  • Brian Bill is a graduate student majoring in Microbiology. After graduation, he plans to continue research investigating the ecology of microbial predators, with the long-term goal of becoming a principal investigator at a university.
  • Nisha Patel is a PhD graduate student majoring in microbiology. After graduation, she plans to pursue jobs in government or industrial labs.
  • Chengcheng Zhang is a PhD graduate student majoring in Plant Biology. She plans to pursue a research or teaching position in plant biology after graduation.
  • Yao Zhang is a graduate student majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He plans to finish his Ph.D. degree in the winter of 2017 and continue his research in remote sensing applications in global change ecology as a post-doc. Long term goals include becoming a professor in a research university and raising the public awareness of climate change.

George L. & Cleo S. Cross Undergraduate Endowed Scholarships - $1000 each

  • Ashlie Cortes is an undergraduate majoring in plant biology. After graduation she plans to start a career that will allow her to do what she loves: working with plants and the environment.
  • Emily Eix is an undergraduate student majoring in microbiology. After graduation, she plans to pursue graduate studies in microbiology and immunology and work as a biomedical researcher.
  • Ella Parsons is an undergraduate student majoring in Anthropology and Microbiology. She aspires to conduct in research human disease ecology to help control and mitigate outbreaks by working with organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control, Doctors without Borders, or the World Health Organization.
  • Dat Troung is a sophomore majoring in Microbiology. After graduation, he plans on attending medical school, with an eventual goal of specializing in orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Larry and Terri Cartmell Scholarship for Medical Technology - $1500

  • Sara Alexander is an undergraduate student majoring in microbiology. After graduation, she plans to become a medical laboratory scientist, and later she will attend graduate school to pursue a career in clinical microbiology and infectious disease.

Paul G. Risser Scholarship - $1500

  • Emily Gutierrez is an undergraduate student majoring in Microbiology Biotechnology with a minor in Spanish. After graduation, she plans to work in a laboratory setting studying antibiotic resistance.

 Lois Pfiester Women in Science Scholarship - $750

  • Liz Saavedra is a graduate student majoring in Microbiology. After graduation, she plans to pursue a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology with an emphasis on the mechanisms used by bacteria for resistance and evasion of innate immunity.

 Harrison L. Chance Scholarship - $750

  • Nathaniel (Nate) Losey is a doctoral student majoring in Microbiology. After graduation, he plans to pursue additional research opportunities at either a postdoctoral position or in the biotech industry with the goal of a career involving using Microbiology to solve future energy and fuel problems.

 Margaret Root McKinley Scholarship - $500

  • Phuong-Thi Lam is an undergraduate student majoring in Microbiology. After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school and obtain a Ph.D. in one of the Biomedical Sciences degrees.
